Region 3 Members,

This is your Monthly Member Communication – September 2021 Edition

Hello, Region 3.  You will notice that many of our sections have chosen to host hybrid meetings moving forward as their new normal. This gives members a choice of joining the meetings live in-person or virtual. We hope that this option will increase both the attendance and membership metrics within Region 3.  Please check out the upcoming meetings this month, see below. Sections are encouraged to participate in at least one IEEE Day event for next month (October 5th).  The challenge is to have 100% participation in IEEE day from all our R3 Sections and Members.  2021 IEEE Day activities and photos will be shared via the  Region 3 website https://r3.ieee.org/ and posted on our social media platforms.  Please browse through the announcements and virtual meetings below and join us.

Arc-Flash Hazards of DC Equipment in PV Plants, By: Dr. Michael Bolen, EPRI

The existing calculations for predicting incident energy of high power dc equipment in large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) plants contradict one another, primarily because they are rooted in theory, not actual physical testing. This presentation will overview results from recent field tests performed at large-scale PV plants by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and how they can improve prediction of incident energy from a dc arc-flash.

IEEE Day, By: Lee Stogner, Region 3 Representative

IEEE Day is celebrating the first time in history when engineers worldwide and IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884. Worldwide celebrations demonstrate the ways thousands of IEEE members in local communities join together to collaborate on ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow. Now engraved in its essence, the IEEE Day’s theme is: “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”. While the world benefits from what’s new, IEEE focuses on what’s next. IEEE Day is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of October to demonstrate awareness of IEEE and join together as a global committee implementing its mission and vision.

Check online https://ieeeday.org/ to engage and participate in an IEEE Day event near you!  For more info on IEEE Day events in Region 3, contact Lee Stogner at l.stogner@ieee.org

Pioneers in Skirts, By: Region 3 WIE Committee

Join 5 IEEE Women in Engineering groups as we watch and discuss the movie Pioneers in Skirts! Pioneers in Skirts is a multi-award-winning social impact film that examines the barriers and setbacks women confront in their careers, starting as early as elementary school. The film analyzes the stereotyping and sexism that can chip away at a girl’s and woman’s pioneering ambition and helps viewers understand what they (themselves) can do to change it.

Attendees will watch the movie prior to the discussion, which will be held Tuesday Oct 5 from 6:30 – 7:30pm ET (5:30 – 6:30pm CT).  The movie will be available on demand for a 3-day period beginning Saturday Oct 2. This s event is being hosted by 5 Sections within Region 3: Atlanta, Huntsville, Piedmont, Eastern North Carolina and Charlotte.

Click to find out more information about the movie or to watch the trailer!

Virtual Meeting Link: Participants will be sent a web link to the meeting once they register online.

We are looking forward to seeing you all in an upcoming IEEE Region 3 meeting!

Sincerely,

Sonya Dillard, Chair
