Region 3 Members,

This is your Monthly Member Communication – February 2022 Edition

Hello Everyone! It’s Ground Hogs Day, so I wonder what’s going to happen with this crazy weather? According to his official handlers in the Groundhogs Club, he saw his shadow, Boo – this means we are in for 6 more weeks of winter. I am so ready for the warmer spring. Every Section is challenged to register for and help us get the word out about our upcoming SoutheastCon! See details below for registration.  We are back LIVE and our R3 signature conference will be hosted in a wonderful location – Mobile, Alabama.  We also want every IEEE member to participate in at least one Engineer’s Week activity this month. This is the month that celebrates engineers, and we should take time out to recognize the many innovations fellow co-workers are contributing to within your local communities. Be sure to post photos of your EWeek events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at:  https://r3.ieee.org/

February 2022 – Region 3 Upcoming Virtual Meetings & Announcements

Wednesday – February 9th, 2022 (12:00pm – 1:00pm EST) Florida West Coast Section

Basics of Grounding Modeling and Design, Lunch-n-Learn, By: Biren Patel & Keith Wallace

The Basics of Grounding Modeling and Design – lunch & learn – will go over the basics of grounding design for substations applications.  The webinar will review what happens during a fault, the risk to personnel, what goes into a typical grounding model, and how to interpret the results.  The lunch & learn will also introduce the various types of testing techniques to serve as inputs for grounding models as well as post installation verification of models and safe touch and step potentials.  While this lunch & learn presentation isn’t supposed to be a complete how-to guide to complete a design or test, it will introduce utility engineers about the grounding study process, and how to interpret the results of a grounding report and help them understand the often-underrated importance of testing.

IEEE COMSOC Distinguished Lecturer: UAV-based Wireless Communications, Computing and Charging

By: Prof. Kun Yang (University of Essex, UK)

This is a joint meeting of the Sacramento Valley Section and the Atlanta Section

With the advancement of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles), edge computing and communications from the sky become possible and indeed provide an effective way to complement the current ground-based horizontal edge computing and communications. This talk will provide a brief introduction to UAV and UAV-assisted wireless communications as well as wireless energy charging, which is carried out together with communications, i.e., the so-called data and energy integrated networks (DEIN). Key research issues and our solutions are presented, including not only theoretical aspects such as problem formulation and algorithms but also experimental implementations. The talk is easy to follow and is suitable to young researchers who are just starting their research study and to anybody who is interested in wireless charging and mobile edge computing and communications.

Current Transformer (CT) Basics for System Protection – Lunch-n-Learn, By: Mallur Satyanarayan

Are you new to the field of system protection or have you ever been curious as to the difference between your typical “step-up” or “step-down” transformers used in substation/switchyard utility applications as compared to current transformers used for metering and relay inputs?  This lunch and learn presentation will cover the following as it relates to current transformers, also known as “CTs:

  1. A basic introduction to Current Transformers,
  2. How Current Transformers are different from “Regular” Transformers,
  3. A brief overview of the characteristics of Current Transformers as applied to a relay protection scheme, and
  4. Selection of Current Transformers with respect to core saturation for relay/protection scheme applications

2022 DiscoverE EWeek Virtual Awards Celebration, By: Leandro Barajas, Section Chair

This annual event is held locally in Huntsville, Alabama to promote engineering and awards to our local engineers for the outstanding contributions they have made in the community, within industry and academia.  For decades this event has been hosted live as a dinner awards banquet.  However, due to the pandemic it was decided to host a virtual awards celebration instead this year to continue to recognize several of the engineers in our local community.  Please join the celebration at this special event!

Distinguished Lecture: Power Conversion Technology for Renewable Energy Systems Integrated into Medium Voltage DC Grids, By: Prof. Kai Sun (Tsinghua University)

In the future smart grid, it is a significant trend to integrate large capacity renewable energy into medium voltage (MV) DC grids. The high-power conversion techniques for wind generation, photovoltaic generation and hydrogen energy system integrated into MVDC grids are reviewed and compared in this lecture, including the system configurations, AC-DC and DC-DC converter designs, control strategies and fault protection. Novel solutions of DC grid-connected photovoltaic generation system are presented, providing new ways to integrate solar energy to DC grids with high efficiency and high-power density. As the key element of high-power isolated DC-DC converters, high frequency transformers with high withstand voltage are studied in terms of multi-physics modeling, magnetic integration, insulation design, thermal design and multi-objective optimization.
