Hello R3,

One thing’s for sure, time flies when you are having fun!  Everyone is so busy these days, let’s not forget to take time out, smell the roses and breathe some fresh air.  The weather is warming up, and folks are getting outside more.  I am getting excited about seeing many of you at our 2022 SoutheastCon in just a few short weeks in Mobile, Alabama!  March is Women’s History month, so let’s celebrate our female engineers in our Sections, and recognize the many innovations women are contributing within our local communities. Be sure to post photos of your events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at:  https://r3.ieee.org/

February 2022 – Region 3 Upcoming Virtual Meetings & Announcements

Tuesday – March 8th, 2022 (11:00am – 12:00pm EST) Region 3 WIE

How has WIE Impacted Your Life? By: Region 3 Women in Engineering

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of Women in Engineering (WIE).  The year 2022 will mark the 25th anniversary of IEEE Women in Engineering and we are planning a full year of celebrations and key moments to reflect on the great progress and achievements made by great women in STEM within the IEEE. We also plan to celebrate the great men who consistently support women along the way. The WIE 25th anniversary Sub-committee is ready to announce the portfolio of activities which will start with concerted reflections by the past and current WIE chairs, who have led the Committee since its formation in 1997, with a special interview session this year.

As part of the WIE Global Marathon.  This will be a 12-hour event covering all regions with presentations. Region 3 will be showcasing a panel discussion with a few WIE members, as they discuss the impacts WIE has made and continues to make an impact in their lives, as well as within the global community. This panel has members from Alabama, Georgia, and Florida.

Cyber Safety in Gaming By: Derik Pack

Are you aware of some signs of gaming addiction? Have you had an accidental online purchase from your toddler playing on your phone/tablet?

This brief is about the steps we all can take to make gaming safer for our kids and families, and the proper behaviors we need to teach children when they are gaming. Parents are welcomed to join and share your tips. STEM volunteers feel free to join and learn the content for your own STEM events.

Distinguished Lecturer Power Conversion Technology, By: Prof. Kai Sun (Tsinghua University)

This Distinguished Lecturer will present on Power Conversion Technology for Renewable Energy Systems Integrated into Medium Voltage DC Grids.  In the future smart grid, it is a significant trend to integrate large capacity renewable energy into medium voltage (MV) DC grids. The high-power conversion techniques for wind generation, photovoltaic generation and hydrogen energy system integrated into MVDC grids are reviewed and compared in this lecture, including the system configurations, AC-DC and DC-DC converter designs, control strategies and fault protection. Novel solutions of DC grid-connected photovoltaic generation system are presented, providing new ways to integrate solar energy to DC grids with high efficiency and high-power density. As the key element of high-power isolated DC-DC converters, high frequency transformers with high withstand voltage are studied in terms of multi-physics modeling, magnetic integration, insulation design, thermal design and multi-objective optimization.
