Hello R3,

I have gotten very some colorful emails from some of you (both good and bad).  Many of you love receiving these messages to be informed, while others not so much.  This month I decided to explain that if you feel this monthly message is SPAM, please go into your IEEE.org account and edit your profile preferences to NOT receive these notices. Members can edit their own profile management preferences. Our volunteers cannot edit email preferences for you.  For everyone else, let’s get excited about our Region 3 SoutheastCon being held in Mobile, Alabama this weekend! Many of you I will meet live, and others we will continue to meet virtually throughout Region 3.  Sections should start posting their photos of live events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at:  https://r3.ieee.org/

Distinguished Lecture: Power Conversion Technology for Renewable Energy Systems Integrated into Medium Voltage DC Grids, By: Prof. Kai Sun (Tsinghua University)

In the future smart grid, it is a significant trend to integrate large capacity renewable energy into medium voltage (MV) DC grids. The high-power conversion techniques for wind generation, photovoltaic generation and hydrogen energy system integrated into MVDC grids are reviewed and compared in this lecture, including the system configurations, AC-DC and DC-DC converter designs, control strategies and fault protection. Novel solutions of DC grid-connected photovoltaic generation system are presented, providing new ways to integrate solar energy to DC grids with high efficiency and high-power density. As the key element of high-power isolated DC-DC converters, high frequency transformers with high withstand voltage are studied in terms of multi-physics modeling, magnetic integration, insulation design, thermal design and multi-objective optimization.

Challenges and Opportunities to Produce Power & Energy from Municipal Solid Wastes,

By: Dr. Toufiq Reza, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Florida Institute of Techknology

In 2018, the United States generated approximately 292.4 million tons of trash and recycled or composted only about 34% of it. While the waste stream of high-income countries is composed of 28% biodegradable, 54% recyclable, and 18% inert materials, among lower income countries, a full 64% is biodegradable and only 19% recyclable and 17% inert. Despite this, municipal solid wastes (MSW) still remains as an environmental, societal, and economical liability, as almost all of it are currently landfilled or incinerated. Several major challenges of MSW are heterogeneity, instability, wetness, and low bulk density. As a result, MSW often alters chemical composition, and physical and biological properties, which present a significant challenge for utilization and conversion to power, energy, and fuel. This lecture will provide an overview of the MSW characteristics, current practices of MSW handling, and challenges of MSW upcycling to power and energy. The lecture will also introduce emerging technologies to overcome the challenges related to MSW utilization to achieve U.S. Department of Energy’s 2030 cost goal of bioenergy of $2.50/gasoline gallon equivalent.
