Region 3 Members,

We are running strong into the second half of the year, and we had lots of new in-person technical meetings.  Hopefully all of our Sections will have an in-person summer social, so take this time to connect with your local Section and see what events they have going on your area.  Take a look at the following list of technical meetings scheduled for this summer. All Sections have been challenged to start posting photos of their live events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at:  https://r3.ieee.org/

Careers at the Rapidly Shifting Human-Technology Frontier: Global Engagement, Local Impact, By: Dr. Fahmida N Chowdhury/IEEE Distinguished Lecturer and NSF Program Director

In this talk, Dr. Chowdhury will argue that in the engineering community, career paths in this changed world should include not only technical fields but also administrative fields, entrepreneurship, science and technology education, and very importantly, policy and diplomacy at local, national and international levels. Adopting such a broad viewpoint would open up many interesting and highly satisfactory career paths and may bring personal and professional fulfillment in unexpected ways. Technical education and training should provide a highly transferable skill-set that can be valuable in many other fields, including that of national and international science and technology policy.

Use of Synchrophasors to Understand what happened to Power Grid During Winter Storm URI Event, By: Dr. Mack Grady, PE

The winter event that occurred in February of 2021 was one of the costliest winter storms on records.  The storm resulted in over 170 million Americans being placed under various winter weather alerts being issued by the National Weather Service in the United States across the country and caused blackouts for over 9.9 million people in the U.S. and Mexico, most notably the 2021 Texas power crisis. The blackouts were the largest in the U.S. since the Northeast blackout of 2003.

DC Arc Flash Calculations, By: Mr. Tom Blair, PE – Senior Member

We will cover the three most common methods for performing Arch Flash calculations: Maximum Power Transfer Method, Stokes & Oppenlander Arc Resistance Method, and the Paukert Arc Resistance Method.

Additionally, we will discuss the difference between methods when applied to a voltage sourced system compared to a photovoltaic sourced system.  Lastly, we will discuss some test results of PV systems and compare to the various calculated models to determine how accurately the models estimate actual incident energy levels on PV systems.
