We welcomed Katherine Ghelarducci from the Kennedy Space Center, Caeley Looney from L3Harris, and Angie Gonzalez and Mineris Figueroa from Northrop Grumman (L-R).<\/p>\n<p>Led by panel moderator and Daytona Section WIE Chair Rebecca DeMarco, panelists described how they became interested in engineering and what excited them about working in aeropsace and aviation. The importance of air superiority for the defense strategy of the U.S. was put into focus, and panelists expressed that they liked to be on the cutting edge, to come up with new solutions, and to respond to learning challenges.<\/p>\n<p>We had a very good turn-out at the &#8220;Job Search Guidance Panel&#8221; Event on October 7. The B-CU team placed 10 out of 44 schools participating in the competition. Lascorz provided an understanding of what EMI testing is and explained in a general way how it supports the development of ground systems for the Artemis program.<br \/>\nHe currently works in the Voice Systems Group where he makes prototypes that reduce costs and survive tricky environments that are unique to NASA. Roger, who immigrated to the US from Catalonia when he was 16 to start college, also leads an Employee Resource Group that represents foreign-born and first-generation Americans called New Americans. He has been working for NASA since 2019 and is a Georgia Institute of Technology alumni.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h4>Expert Panel:\u00a0 Women in Aerospace and Aviation<\/h4>\n<p>The Daytona Section WIE, along with the Section, presented the monthly program on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, featuring an expert panel of women engineers employed in aerospace and aviation. We welcomed Mineris Figueroa and Angie Gonzalez from Northrop Grumman, Katherine Ghelarducci from the Kennedy Space Center, and Caeley Looney from L3Harris.<\/p>\n<p>Led by panel moderator and Daytona Section WIE Chair Rebecca DeMarco, panelists described how they became interested in engineering and what excited them about working in aeropsace and aviation. This prestigious award is granted to<br \/>\neducators \u201cIn recognition and appreciation for Service to IEEE and to the Engineering Profession\u201d.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>Excellence in Teaching:<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. T. Wilson, Chairman of the EE and CS Department at ERAU notes:<br \/>\nIn certain of his courses, Dr. Garfield employs a method he developed where students explicitly demonstrate the degree to which they are achieving learning outcomes. Those outcomes are made explicit, and the degree (or lack thereof) to which students attain them is an artifact developed over the term. His effort to develop novel ways of providing effective feedback to students is an example of the thoughtfulness with which he approaches the seriousness of instruction.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service to the Community:<\/strong><br \/>\nDr. Garfield has taught an introductory course in computer programming at the Father Lopez High School in Daytona Beach after school hours and a week long Computer Camp during the summer. Dr. Garfield championed an increase in the awards the Section provides to the local Tomoka High School Science Fair for engineering excellence.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Service to IEEE:<\/strong><br \/>\nIn 2018, Dr. Garfield assumed the role of Student Advisor for ERAU. That year, the Daytona Section was the only Section in Region 3 to increase its membership, and the<br \/>\nincrease was due to new student members. We have seen a substantial increase in activity in both the student branch and WIE affinity group at ERAU, because Dr. Garfield has inspired students to join the branch and to participate in events and activities. For example, in Oct., 2019, ERAU had three teams participate in the IEEEXtreme Programming competition.
