[CIS|IES] Design and Control of Hybrid Active Power Filters for Power Quality Compensation

With the proliferation and increased use of power electronic devices (nonlinear loads) and motor loadings, such as: converters, adjustable speed drives (ASDs), bulk rectifiers, power supplies, elevators, escalators, large air conditioning systems, etc., the power quality (PQ) problems become more and more serious, especially for lower power factor, harmonic current, unbalanced current, etc., which strongly affects the performance, efficiency and reliability of the grid. Active power filter is one of the effective solutions to solve the PQ problems, however, its initial and operational costs are relatively high due to its high DC-link operation voltage requirement. To relax this drawback, the combination of passive and active power filters to form a hybrid active power filter (HAPF) can provide a cost-effective solution for PQ compensation. In this talk, the topology and control strategy of the HAPF system developed by University of Macau will be presented and discussed, and its practical application case in Macao will be introduced.
