On Tuesday evening, 10\/14\/25, the IEEE FWCS Pace group presented their “COBOL: Your Secret To Long Term Job Security<\/b>” presentation. This event was well attended.<\/p>\n

The amount of COBOL code that is currently in use was described as well as the problem that institutions like banks are facing because their existing COBOL programmers are all approaching retirement age and universities are no longer training the next generation of COBOL programmers.<\/p>\n

The structure of COBOL programs was reviewed and how variables are declared and used was also covered.<\/p>\n

Every day $3 Trillion worth of transactions are handled by COBOL code.<\/p>\n<p>Man, with that much COBOL code being used it sure seems like it must be taught in every school! Well, the answer is that COBOL is so old that it’s really not taught any more. The hip and cool language like Java, Python, C++ are what the kids are learning today. However, as those stats show you, it’s really COBOL that runs the world that we live in.<\/p>\n<p>Where things start to get really interesting is when you take a look at just exactly who is programming in COBOL today. In this presentation, the ways that engineers search for their next jobs were explored. Both the use of the online LinkedIn tool and a personal resume were determined to be the most effect ways for an engineer to communicate their skills to a future employer. During the presentation the Claude AI tool was used to use an engineer’s work history to create detailed work summary’s for each position that they had held. The tool was then used to create a LinkedIn About section for the engineer that summarized their career in a way that would capture what they had worked on.<\/p>\n<p>When discussing the best way to use AI to improve a resume several different points were made. A new resume for an engineer who didn’t have a resume was created during the presentation. Then a potential job that the engineer might apply for was located. The job description was scanned to determine the key words that had been used to describe the position. Almost overnight it seems to have shown up in just about everything that we do. In fact, Meta has just announced that they have worked AI into their popular Facebook and Instagram tools for everyday users. The key to making AI work for you is to understand what AI tools have become available to you \u2013 and how to use them!<\/p>\n<p>One of the most demanding jobs that engineers are currently facing is finding their next job. No matter if you are just first starting out, if you job has gone away, or if you are just looking for a better job than the one that you currently have, finding your next job can be a real challenge.<\/p>\n<p>We all have a resume. However, how did that resume get put together? If you are like most of us, once upon a time you looked up what resumes were supposed to look like, created one that seemed to do the trick and then you’ve been updating it ever since. Bad news \u2013 that type of resume is not going to get you the job that you are looking for these days.<\/p>\n<p>As long as we are talking about resumes, should we also talk about your LinkedIn profile? During your lifetime your resume will be seen by maybe 40-50 people, but your LinkedIn profile will probably be seen by 100’s if not 1000’s of people. No matter if you have seen YouTube videos of people filming events, racing them, flying over New York \/ New Jersey or from the war in Ukraine it seems like drones are in the news almost every day. In fact, you might even own one of these yourself.<\/p>\n<p>There is no doubt that a drone has become a valuable tool for doing a number of things such as inspecting power lines, following whales, making movies, etc. However, what comes next? Where do we go from here? It turns out that being able to control a single drone and have it fly to a location and perhaps do something is very valuable. However, what would you do if you wanted to take a lot of something to a location or do something there over and over again? Yes, you could fly your drone there, do it, fly it back, outfit it again, then rinse and repeat; however, the time and effort involved in doing this would potentially be prohibitive. There has to be a better way…<\/p>\n<p>It turns out that there might be a better way: swarms. You and I already know about swarms. How many times in the Fall have we looked up into the sky and seen massive groups of birds following each other as they swoop and migrate? It turns out that fish do the same thing. Since swarming already exists in nature, perhaps we can learn something from the creatures that already do this and apply it to not only drones but to robotics in general. What would that look like?<\/p>\n<p>Good news: you have an opportunity to find out. In this presentation we’re going to be taking a look at the cutting edge research that is going into finding out how swarms work in nature with the plan to take this knowledge and apply it to robotics and drones. In the not too distant future you might look up and see a swarm of drones heading off to look for a lost child, inspect a failing dam, or deliver needed supplies. As engineers, we all understand that the AI tools that are becoming available to us are just that \u2013 tools. Yes, yes \u2013 in the future AI robots may take over the world, but we are not there yet. Instead, engineers need to take the time to look at the AI tool that are being made available to us and decide which ones are going to be valuable. Once we’ve done that, we then have to decide how we are going to use them.<\/p>\n<p>All of this AI stuff is new to all of us. Your IEEE FWCS PACE team is going to tackle the challenge that AI is presenting us with and you are invited to come along. We think that once you can get beyond all of the hype and the crazy market valuations of some of these AI companies, the AI tools that have been made available to us just might be useful. Next Level”.<\/p>\n<p>This well attended event was presented by Dr. Jim Anderson, the chairman of the PACE group.<\/p>\n<p>During the presentation two key topics were covered. The first was how engineers could create LinkedIn profiles that would demonstrate their skills and experience. This included how they could create headlines that would attract recruiters and job offers. The second part of the presentation focused on how the LinkedIn tool could be used to connect with more people in order to build an engineer’s network.
