VMS will host two WEBEX Seminars from the Distinguished Speakers Series this March. Each session will last up to 2 hours . Participants will be eligible to receive continuing education hours for attending these technical lectures:

Thursday March 18 at 5:45, Jonathan Woodworth of ArresterWorks in Boynton Beach, FL will present:

The History of Surge Protection of Power Systems Grounding

This presentation covers the introduction of surge arresters in the 1800’s to the most recent paradigm shift that has brought us to the surge arrester of today.  Surge protection didn’t start with Edison, it started much earlier.  Both the product and design engineer of the original product are discussed.  It is a lesson in design as well as a lesson in history.

Then on Thursday March 25 at 5:45, Dr. Babak Enyati of Waltham, MA will present on

IEEE 1547 STANDARD AND DER INTERCONNECTIONS

Due to the increasing amount of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) interconnections with the Electric Power System, the IEEE 1547 standard is going through a major revision to address some of the technical issues associated with high penetration of DERs i. e. grid support functionalities, etc.

Attendees of this presentation will learn about the major changes to the IEEE 1547 i. e. voltage regulation, response to abnormal system conditions (including voltage and frequency ride through), power quality, islanding, interoperability, etc.

The participants will also learn about the utility concerns/solutions to adopt the revised IEEE 1547 standard.
