Abstract:
The phenomena of arc flash is a concern to any engineer that works on high power electrical equipment. The IEEE has sought to quantify the hazard of arc flash in IEEE 1584-2018, which is an update of IEEE-1584 2002. To update the standard, testing was done to determine the arc flash effects as a function of numerous variables (which took years) followed by analysis that produced the equations presented in the standard.
However, the analysis has limitations. Very high power excitation equipment may fall outside the range of applicability of the standard.
Examples of arc flash events will be shown followed by an explanation of the use of the standard, along with a discussion of the PPE used to protect personnel from the hazards of arc flash.
