New Fiber To The Edge (FTTE) technologies, provide bandwidth and power to edge devices allowing the network to be as future-flexible as possibleand realize significant CAPEX and OPEX cost savings over traditional copper technologies. With all of these growing network demands, connectivity is now the 4th utility; and as such, network design and implementation has to be thought in a more modern way and should be designed around your building, not your buildingaround your network.

The Fiber Deep/Power Deep (FTTE) technology allows you to extend well past traditional 90 meter limitations and solve for multiple applicationswith one unified infrastructure. A fiber deep solution also eliminates the need for disruptive and costly rip-and-replace traditional infrastructures. In addition toinfrastructure, FTTE solution can solve for both IP and RF connectivity, thus providing more cost savins and future proving of infrastructure for all voice, video, anddata networks to meet current and future technology needs.

THE SPEAKER

Juan-Carlos Gaillard graduated in June 1993 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Florida Tech (Florida Institute of Technology). Hestarted his career with Corning as a Field Engineer in June 1997 and performed that duty through February 2000. He transitioned to a Systems Engineering role inMarch 2000 and performed that duty through March 2003. He then took the role of Senior Systems Engineer / Senior FTTX System Designer in March 2003 throughSeptember 2005. In September 2005 he became the Private Networks Sales Engineer for the Rocky Mountain territory, covering the states of CO, UT, WY, MT andID. Then in Dec 2010 he transitioned to being a Sr. Private Networks Sales Engineer for Southern VA out of Richmond and currently is in this role. In his role heutilizes technical/engineering, sales, and marketing background to grow Corning’s market share. He mainly supports customers with fiber network designrecommendations, fiber optic BOM developments, fiber installation advise, fiber product knowledge and technology trainings, and overall partner and customersupport for the design and implantation of Voice, Video, and Data Fiber Optic Networks.

Come join us for dinner and a great technical presentation.VMS will cover dinner cost. The standard is based on IEEE Std. 399 (Brown Book) with many new enhancements and additions. The new standard systematically addresses requirements and recommendations for performing power system harmonic studies, including developing system models, modeling various harmonic sources and electrical equipment and devices,
preparing required data for modeling and studies, validating model and data, selecting study cases, and analyzing results and outputs from the studies. Necessary features for computer tools that are used to perform harmonic-analysis are listed and discussed. The latest IEEE Std. 519-2014 “Recommended Practices and Requirements for Harmonic Control in Electrical Power Systems” is referenced in the standard, as well as references related to interharmonics. One illustration example is provided at end of the tutorial to help readers further understand harmonic studies and expected results. Although Si power devices continue to make progress, they are approaching their operational limits primarily due to their relatively low bandgap and critical electric field that result in high conduction and switching losses, and poor high temperature performance.

In this presentation, the co-existence of Si, SiC, and GaN will be discussed, and their respective competitive advantages highlighted. The favorable material properties of Silicon Carbide, which allow for highly efficient power devices with reduced form-factor and cooling requirements, will be outlined. High impact application opportunities, where SiC devices are displacing their incumbent Si counterparts, will be reported. Fab models and the vibrant SiC manufacturing infrastructure (that mirrors that of Si) will be presented. Barriers to SiC mass commercialization will be identified and analyzed. These include the higher than silicon device cost, reliability and ruggedness concerns, defects that degrade device performance, and the need for a trained workforce to skillfully insert SiC into power electronics systems.

Bio

Dr. Victor Veliadis is Executive Director & CTO of PowerAmerica, a member-driven consortium of industry, universities, and national labs accelerating the commercialization of energy efficient SiC and GaN power semiconductor technologies. At PowerAmerica, he has managed a budget of $150 million that he strategically allocated to over 200 industrial and University projects to catalyze SiC/GaN semiconductor and power electronics manufacturing, workforce development, and job creation. His PowerAmerica educational activities have trained 420 full-time students in collaborative industry/University WBG projects, and engaged over 4500 attendees in tutorials, short courses, and webinars.

Dr. Veliadis is an ECE Professor at NCSU, an IEEE Fellow, and an ΙΕΕΕ EDS Distinguished Lecturer. He has 27 issued U.S. patents, 6 book chapters, and over 150 peer-reviewed publications to his credit. Prior to entering academia and taking an executive position at Power America in 2016, Dr. Veliadis spent 21 years in the semiconductor industry where his work included design, fabrication, and testing of SiC devices, GaN devices for military radar amplifiers, and financial and operations management of a commercial semiconductor fab.
