This is your Monthly Member Communication – April 2021 Edition

Well Hello Folks! Hopefully you all have enjoyed an awesome Spring Break.  My family enjoyed a road trip throughout several states and saw lots of amazing sites in Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa and back to Alabama.  I was able to tell the kids about the awesome wind turbine farms while passing through Illinois and Iowa.  It was a beautiful site of hundreds of giant wind turbines spinning and generating power for the local cities.  Lots of STEM education on road trips, which makes me proud to be in the IEEE.  Please browse through the announcements and virtual technical meetings below to see what’s going on in Region 3. AI & A/IS Quality: Integrating Development Methodology & Ethics Processes, By: Robert Hobbs

Previously, we identified Ethical frameworks and their benefits to development.  Today we will outline an approach to integrate an ethical framework into an Agile methodology. Including ethical requirements with functional requirements allows the product owner to review diverse requirements to prioritize development needs for the business properly. Including bias issues and other ethics bugs with features allows the teams to have visibility of all issues to include how they may interact. While Ethical compliance does mandate some additional processes and roles, minimizing the ethics-specific items maximizes the team’s ability to maintain signs of all the issues and weaknesses associated with the A/IS efforts.

JTA: What it takes to run a Fleet of Autonomous Vehicles, By: William Frazer, JTA/Dir. of Automation/Testing

In 2020, JTA took the next step in fielding a fleet of autonomous vehicles to meet the transportation needs of the Jacksonville and Duval county’s citizens. The JTA has been working on autonomous vehicles as part of the Ultimate Urban Circulator (U2C) program since 2017. The Olli 2.0 vehicles are part of U2C larger program to both reach rider locations while repurposing the Skyway and other facilities. The Olli’s and facilities will be part of a 10-mile urban transit network. Operating autonomous vehicles requires extensive planning and preparation. William Frazer, Director of Automation & Quality, and his team at JTA have will provide an overview of the Olli’s and their operational processes. Focal areas for the discussion include planning for power demands and automation services.

In this seminar, we will cover a few of the major areas of application for remote sensing-based solutions in precision farming, as well as the challenges each of these pose. We will look at several examples of industry-based solutions and their implementations in different regions of the world. We will also discuss cutting-edge, newly-developed imaging technologies and how they might be used to advance agricultural applications of remote sensing in the coming years.

AI & A/IS Quality: Demonstration of Applying an Ethical Framework to Face Recognition By: Robert Hobbs

After the earlier presentations on Ethics Frameworks and integration with Agile, today we will demonstrate an approach using an Ethical framework in an Agile development methodology. We will step through an ethical framework and development methodology for a notional Face Recognition application for consumer smartphones. We will work through the processes to select a framework, identify stakeholders, and determine the organizational changes required.

Within the teams’ Agile development methodologies, the ethical factors will drive additional product features and testing requirements. The presentation will show how a team could use Jira to provide visibility and accountability throughout the A/IS lifecycle.

Propane – A Low Carbon Solution for the Future, By: Gokul Vishwanathan

In this talk, the speaker will provide an overview of the advantages of using propane as a low carbon fuel source for several applications including distributed generation, microgrids, medium-duty vehicles, and as a complement for renewables in stationary and transportation applications. In addition, emerging propane technologies (e.g. renewable propane) will be presented.

The virtual 2021 IEEE Radar Conference will be hosted by the IEEE Atlanta Section and the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society (AESS). This webinar covers Radar Electronic Protection techniques used in modern threats (unclassified) focusing on their impact upon the way we intercept and jam threat radars.
