About Us

Atlanta WIE was formed in July 2010 with just six women at the first meeting. In less than two years we had grown to over 30 active members. We have participated in numerous STEM outreach events, such as Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, held for several years at Ivy Prep Academy, a public charter middle school for girls in Gwinnett County. In addition, we work with the Girl Scouts at the annual Girl Scouts STEM Expo, and we have provided volunteers for career days and other STEM events in the Atlanta area. We also hold professional development events, such as speakers and panel discussions, as well as co-host networking events with other Atlanta area women technology groups.

Our Mission

The mission of IEEE WIE is to inspire, engage, encourage, and empower IEEE women worldwide. The primary focus of the Atlanta WIE Section is to encourage young women and girls to consider careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields. We believe that to meet the future need for workers in STEM fields, we must increase the number of girls who pursue STEM careers. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, women hold less than 25% of STEM jobs. Moreover, this has been the case throughout the past decade, even as college-educated women have increased their share of the overall workforce. By personally interacting with girls before they start college, we give them the opportunity to meet successful, enthusiastic women who work in STEM fields and can share what they love about their careers.
