High-Voltage Clean-Air Breaker
Abstract
Utilities are leveraging technology to meet environmental goals. High-voltage clean-air breakers are a step in that direction because they do not contain greenhouse gases, unlike existing SF6 technology with its comparatively large greenhouse-gas footprint. The discussion compared clean-air technology with current SF6 breaker technology and alternative-gas solutions.
Speaker
Eddie Hester received his B.S.E.E. from Mississippi State University in 1995. He has worked at Entergy since 1997 and was listed as a senior staff engineer supporting substation equipment. The event announcement identifies him as the subject-matter expert for high-voltage breakers and notes a recent clean-air breaker installation at an Entergy substation in Vicksburg, Mississippi.
Effects of Distributed Energy Resources on the Transmission and Distribution Grids
Abstract
The discussion examined the negative effects of high penetrations of distributed energy resources on load-tap-changer operations, including excessive tap operations and subsequent distribution-voltage flicker. Two mitigation strategies were presented: widening the LTC deadband from the existing 2-volt setting to 3 volts and using smart-inverter reactive-power injection with an appropriate Q–V curve. A transmission system with a detailed distribution model was studied in a co-simulation environment to observe the impacts of DER-interfaced community solar and the proposed solutions.
Speaker
Shahab Mehraeen received electrical-engineering degrees from Iran University of Science and Technology, Esfahan University of Technology, and Missouri University of Science and Technology. Before his Ph.D., he worked in power-generation retrofit projects and control systems. He joined Louisiana State University in 2010. The event announcement lists research interests including microgrids, renewable energy, power-system dynamics, AC and DC protection, AC–DC grids, smart grids, and control of dynamical systems. It also identifies him as an NSF CAREER awardee, patent holder, director of LSU's Smart Grid and Renewable Power Laboratory: Control and Protection, and an IEEE Senior Member.
