Presentation:
This presentation will deal with the following aspects of shunt capacitor switching
1. The importance of selecting the correct size of capacitor to be switched with a given load in order to avoid over-voltages and torque transients that would result from self-excitation.
2. The location of capacitor connected points.
3. Capacitor switching for special motors and for special motor-starting applications.
4. Transient inrush and frequency for the following cases:
a) When a single capacitor is energized on a system.
b) When a capacitor is energized in parallel with capacitor banks which are already connected to the system.
5. The effect of the above transient currents on capacitor switching contactors
6. The use of air core reactors to limit the transient current in parallel switching of capacitors.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Clayton Reid, (Canada): (F’03), ( chreid@ieee.org) was born in Canada in 1933. He received the Technologists degree in electrical engineering from Ryerson Institute of Technology in Toronto, Canada in 1955. He became a registered engineer in Ontario, Canada in 1971. In 1955 he joined Allen-Bradley Company and became Chief of Engineering in 1971. Mr. Reid became the Vice President of Engineering at Rockwell Automation in 1974. He moved into various positions at Rockwell, including Vice President of the Medium Voltage Business and an Executive Consultant on Industrial Power Engineering in 1994.

Mr. Clayton Reid has advanced medium voltage (MV) motor control technology through a combination of conceptual design, development, testing and guidance of others for advancements in air break contactors, vacuum contactors, solid state starters and adjustable frequency drives. The most significant of these was the increase in current ratings and voltage ratings of MV starters utilizing air break contactors prior to 1982 and then subsequently with vacuum contactors. In 1969 Mr. Reid assisted in the conceptual design of Allen-Bradley’s first 600-amp air break contactor. In 1972 he provided the initial conceptual design to increase the ratings on a 6900 volt across the line starters to a 75 kV BIL withstand rating. In 1972 he provided the original conceptual design for the first Allen-Bradley 3 high MV starter. From 1981 – 1983, he was part of a joint team with Allen-Bradley and Mitsubishi to develop a 400-amp MV vacuum contactor for use in Allen-Bradley medium voltage motor control centers. This was introduced to the market September 1983, and the basis of all the MV motor control centers since. In 1985 and 1986 Mr. Reid guided the design and implementation of a new MV starter utilizing an 800-amp vacuum contactor. From 1987 to 1988 Mr. Reid provided the design concepts and guided the detailed design of Allen-Bradley’s first internally designed and manufactured 400-amp MV vacuum contactor. He was part of the team that did the conceptual and detailed design of a new molded MV isolator for MV starters in 1990. From 1972 To 1994, Mr. Reid was the safety coordinator for all new MV motor controller designs to assure that the Allen-Bradley product was one of the safest available in the market. Mr. Reid was one of the leaders in this industry to change MV motor control technology from maintenance intensive, bulky air break starters to vacuum contactor control. He also led the efforts for the development of MV drives and solid state motor starters. He continually assured that the application of these technologies was not only leading edge, but also resulted in products that were maintainable, practical and extremely safe.

Mr. Reid has been active for many years as an officer within the Pulp and Paper Industry Technical Committee, culminating in Chair of the Committee for 1989 and 1990. He was Chair of the IAS Pulp & Paper Conference in 1984. Clayton has been a member of the IAS Executive Board in various functions since 1989, including IAS History Chair from 1989 – 1990, Member at Large from 1992 – 1993, Membership Chair from 1991 – 2001, IAS Awards Chair from 2002-2004, and now as the Process Industries Department Chair. Mr. Reid received the Pulp and Paper Industry Award for Meritorious Service in 1991.
