Speaker’s Bio: Dr. Jonn Kim founded Geeks and Nerds (GaN) with the goal of being a high-tech technology firm with a primary focus on enhancing the quality of life through a proper balance of technology and nature. In addition to technological interests, he has initiated urban organic farming, reuse and recycle of trash, and renewable energy research at GaN. Dr. Jonn Kim has almost 30 years of experience in engineering and management for federal government, commercial industries, and academia. His technical background includes test & evaluation (T&E), modeling & simulation (M&S), communications theory, signal and image processing, ultra-wide band radar, robotics, artificial intelligence, and electronics. Dr. Kim received a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Vanderbilt University and a MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He holds multiple patents and publishes numerous papers at conferences for IEEE, ITEA, and SIW. He is a member of Vanderbilt University Industry Advisory Committee, IEEE, NDIA, and ITEA, and he currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Better Business Bureau.
He has been recognized as the Huntsville Association of Technical Societies (HATS) Professional of the Year (2013) and the IEEE Huntsville Professional of the Year (2013); he has received the University of Alabama Huntsville Alumni of Achievement Award (2012); and he has been a Finalist for the Russell Brown Executive Leadership Award (2012, 2011, and 2010) and the Entrepreneur of the Year Award (2009). Under his leadership GaN has won the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Top 100 Best Small Businesses Blue Ribbon Award (2013), the Top 50 Fastest Growing Asian American Business Award (2013), the Huntsville Madison County Technology Company of the Year Award (2012), a Top 10 Fastest Growing Government Contractor in AL (2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009), and the BBB of North Alabama Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics (2011). GaN has also been a Finalist for the SBA South East Small Business Prime Contractor of the Year (2010) and a Contender for the Chamber of Commerce Best Places to Work Award (2012, 2011, 2010, and 2009).
Dr. Kim founded the Geeks and Nerds Scholarship to establish financial aid for deserving students at the following higher education institutions: University of Alabama – Tuscaloosa and Huntsville campuses, Alabama A&M University, Athens State University, Vanderbilt University, Auburn University, New Mexico State University, Central Texas College, Texas A&M, Cochise Community College, University of Arizona, Pima Community College, Calhoun Community College, and University of Texas-Austin.
