The rapid growth of inverter-based loads and inverter-based resources (IBRs) is fundamentally changing the behavior, operation, and planning of modern electric power systems. Renewable generation, battery energy storage, power-electronic loads, data centers, electric transportation, and other converter-interfaced technologies introduce new challenges related to system stability, protection, power quality, harmonics, modeling, controls, and grid integration. The IEEE Eastern North Carolina Section Power & Energy Society (PES) Chapter invites you to a technical session featuring Dr. Damir Novosel, CEO and Co-Founder of Dash Power Partners and former IEEE Power & Energy Society President. The presentation will examine key technical and operational challenges associated with increasing penetration of inverter-based technologies and discuss practical approaches for maintaining a reliable, resilient, and secure power grid. Topics will include the changing characteristics of power systems with reduced synchronous generation, interactions between inverter controls and the grid, protection and stability concerns, and emerging approaches for integrating inverter-based resources and loads. The session will provide perspectives relevant to practicing engineers, researchers, utility professionals, consultants, students, and anyone interested in the evolution of modern electric power systems. Join IEEE ENCS Young Professionals for a two-hour conversation with two educators watching this shift from very different vantage points: an IEEE Life Fellow who spent four decades building mission-critical systems before moving into undergraduate engineering education, and a biomedical imaging researcher training graduate scientists in a field AI is actively reshaping. Speakers Dr. Kim Fowler — Professor of Engineering, Campbell University Kim Fowler has spent over 40 years in the design, development, and project management of medical, military, and satellite equipment, with a focus on the rigorous development of mission-critical embedded systems. He co-founded Stimsoft, a medical products company, in 1998 and sold it five years later. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE, a past President of the IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society (2010–2011), and a former Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Magazine. He currently serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of IEEE Systems Journal and is an adjunct professor in the Johns Hopkins University Engineering Professional Program. He has authored four textbooks and holds 18 patents granted, pending, or disclosed. He earned his Ph.D. from Kansas State University. Dr. Sajan Goud Lingala — Associate Professor, Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering and Department of Radiology, University of Iowa Sajan Goud Lingala is Principal Investigator of the Laboratory of Quantitative and Dynamic Magnetic Resonance Imaging at the University of Iowa, where his group develops imaging technologies for quantitative and dynamic MRI. He holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa, an M.Tech. in Biomedical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, and a B.E. in Biomedical Engineering from Osmania University.
