On Tuesday evening, 10/14/25, the IEEE FWCS Pace group presented their “COBOL: Your Secret To Long Term Job Security” presentation. This event was well attended.

The amount of COBOL code that is currently in use was described as well as the problem that institutions like banks are facing because their existing COBOL programmers are all approaching retirement age and universities are no longer training the next generation of COBOL programmers.

The structure of COBOL programs was reviewed and how variables are declared and used was also covered.
