IEEE WNC Student Hardware Competition Meetup and Robot Face-Off

February 20 @ 5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Event Category:

IEEE WNC Section is sponsoring a Robot Face-Off pre-competition between UNC-A and WCU this year again about 30 days before the actual competition at IEEE Region 3’s SouthEastCon 2024 in Atlanta Georgia. This will afford the Student Sections the chance to finalize their designs and compete against a real opponent before setting off to Atlanta to gain fame and glory for WNC and their schools in the official competition.

Competition Theme: The year is 2047. Humanity has established a planetary defense system called GRID to protect Earth from potential threats in space. The system is highly advanced and has thwarted numerous dangers over the years. However, a catastrophic event has occurred, shattering the calm. A comet named 2047-5-L1 has collided with the V-X7 exploration craft, causing a massive release of asteroids. The asteroids are headed straight for Earth, and the consequences of an impact would be catastrophic. GRID is the only hope of salvation for the planet, but it needs crucial components to delivered and assembled to activate its active protection systems.

First, your team must aquire and deliver the packages containing the components needed to the control station. Afterward, your team must pick up the rocket thruster fuel tanks and bring them to the Launch Pad. Then various assembly tasks need to be accomplished. Only with all these taks completed is the system activated and then it is possible to deflect the asteroids away from Earth, saving the planet from complete destruction. To accomplish to goal, you must deliver the packages to the correct location, pick up the thruster tanks and deliver them to the launch pad as quickly as possible (within 90 secs). Earth will hail you as heroes and forever remember your bravery and sacrifice. With your help, humanity knows they can always count on GRID to protect them from any danger lurking in space!

Points Tasks

Total possible points for delivery of critical components = 30 points
5 Larger Boxes × 3 = 15 points
3 Small Boxes × 5 = 15 Points
(Assembly of the components adds points)

Completing to competition within 1 minute 30 seconds = 30 points (5 points will be deducted for each additional 15 seconds)

Successful arrival at the thruster fuel assembly zone = 20 points

Successful thruster fuel tank assembly = 20 points

Robot starts autonomously by recognizing the countdown timer green light = 5 points

Participate: Please join us as we will livestream this event from the venue, if possible. Cheer for your preferred team and wish all the students luck as we send them off save us all from an asteriod debris field in 30 days! In-person venue is located at University of North Carolina – Asheville.
