Region 3 Members,

This is your Monthly Member Communication – December 2020 Edition

A special thanks goes out to Tamseel Mahmood Syed, a R3 member from the Atlanta Section, for creating our Google Docs Drive to collection our region’s virtual meeting announcements.  This month’s communication was much easier to create/send.  With most events currently being virtual these days, we thought it would be nice to allow anyone to attend from the Region. As a response to our Member Development Initiative, this will enhance our members’ technical and professional growth during this pandemic, as well as engage our Sections in virtual collaboration across the Region.

We hope you have a very safe and blessed holiday season.  Please browse through these virtual meetings below, and hopefully a few of these technical topics will spark your interest!

Powering Wireless Microsystems, By: Professor Gabriel A. Rincón-Mora

Networked wireless microsystems can not only monitor and manage power consumption in small- and large-scale applications for space, military, medical, agricultural, and consumer markets but also add cost-, energy-, and life-saving intelligence to large infrastructures and tiny devices in remote and difficult-to-reach places. Ultra-small systems, however, cannot store sufficient energy to sustain monitoring, interface, processing, and telemetry functions for long. And replacing or recharging the batteries of hundreds of networked nodes can be labor intensive, expensive, and oftentimes impossible. This is why alternate sources are the subject of ardent research today. Except power densities are low, and in many cases, intermittent, so supplying functional blocks is challenging. Plus, tiny lithium-ion batteries and super capacitors, while power dense, cannot sustain life for extended periods. This talk illustrates how emerging microelectronic systems can draw energy from elusive ambient sources to power tiny wireless sensors.

Machine Learning Demystified, By: Carol J. McDonald

Machine Learning requires large data sets and offers a variety of algorithmic tools. Ms. McDonald will give an overview of Machine learning and Deep Learning with real-world examples. The advancement of streaming analytics, distributed processing, and cloud technologies has opened up new vistas for machine learning. Successful business implementations require understanding the goals and limitations of the technology to include which tools best support the data and the analysis objectives.

“Picture a Scientist” Movie Viewing and Discussion, By: Atlanta Women in Engineering (WIE)

When you picture a scientist, do you picture a man, or a woman? Join us for a discussion of the movie “Picture a Scientist”, which explores the experiences of 3 female scientists in navigating and overcoming the bias and harassment they encounter. Their stories are compelling and engaging, and you’ll be encouraged for the future by the end of the movie. Even if you can’t make the discussion, sign up to watch the movie!

Mobile Edge Computing and Communications from the Sky, By: Distinguished Lecturer Dr. Kun Yang

With the advancement of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) edge computing and communications from the sky become possible and indeed provide an effective way to complement the current ground-based horizontal edge computing and communications. This talk starts with a brief introduction of UAV and UAV-assisted wireless communications, and then moves on to discuss the necessity of a close collaboration of the two important resources in any ICT system, namely, communication and computation, again in the context of UAVs….(see more on website)
