Welcome to Region 3's STEM Outreach Website!

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These disciplines are in every aspect of our lives, fuel innovation, and create millions of jobs.   IEEE Region 3 seeks to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by showing elementary students how STEM forms the foundation of the world around us, proving how fun and interesting these fields are to middle and high school students, and encouraging college and graduate students into the professional community.

What is STEM Outreach?

STEM Outreach provides opportunities for students to learn from professionals who are actively contributing to science, technology, engineering, and math. A STEM outreach event is an opportunity for someone to learn more about STEM, what STEM is, and how it affects our everyday world. Whether giving a tour a lab, hosting an event, or mentoring a student, STEM outreach can take many shapes or forms

Why is STEM Outreach is Important?

According to the National Science Foundation, “In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”

STEM-based education teaches students more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets and promotes lifelong learning.
