Region 3 Members,

This is your Monthly Member Communication – January 2022 Edition

Happy New Year Everyone! Yes, I am a little late getting this message out, but I had two glorious weeks to chill out and relax.  Now it’s time to hit the ground running! Let’s make this year 2022 be the best year ever!  We want more of our Sections to participate by submitting your meetings earlier, so they have ample time to be publicized to our membership (which will maximize your attendance).  Our Region 3 SoutheastCon will be back in-person in 2022 in Mobile, AL. so keep an eye out for registration information which will be out coming soon. The Region 3 website is located at:  https://r3.ieee.org/  Next month is EWeek, so definitely let us know about any Engineering Week activities happening within your area!

January 2022 – Region 3 Upcoming Virtual Meetings & Announcements

Saturday – January 15th, 2022 (10:00am – 11:00am EST) R3 Women in Engineering (WIE)

IEEE Awards Training By: Katherine Kim

Training for Women in Engineering Leaders. We hope you can join to learn more about and be able to nominate and submit applications for many of the IEEE and WIE awards available each year.

There are plenty testimonies on how receiving an award greatly benefits and even affects the life of the recipient. Even though most of the amazing volunteers and leaders IEEE has given their time freely and happily, and the various industry experts work on what passionate them, it does not damage them when honored by the great work they perform.

Through the years we have seen how little participation our area has on this matter, and it’s time to change that.

Katherine Kim has been an extraordinary IEEE volunteer and will help us learn more about the awards as well as how to apply for them or submit nominations. Let’s hope our numbers change by the end of 2022 and onwards.

Keeping Our Kids Cyber Safe, By: Derik Pack, IEEE STEM Ambassador

One of the first lessons we learn in conducting experiments is to put safety first. As more kids use the internet, they need to hear and understand what safe activities are. This presentation discusses the internet, the gap between digital natives and digital visitors, and lots of tips and tricks to keep your children safer in the digital world. Consider joining if you are a parent looking for an active discussion on digital safety or a STEM volunteer looking for a great opening presentation in your STEM arsenal.

2022 DiscoverE Eweek Awards Celebration, By: Leandro Barajas, Huntsville Section Chair

This annual event is held locally in Huntsville, Alabama to promote engineering and award our local engineers for the outstanding contributions they have made in the community and within industry and academia.  For decades this event has been hosted live as a dinner awards banquet.  However, due to the pandemic it was decided to host a virtual awards celebration instead this year to continue to recognize several of the engineers in our local community.  Please join us at this special event!

SAVE THE DATE (March 31st – April 3rd) SoutheastCon, 2022 in Mobile, Alabama

SoutheastCon is an annual conference primarily for the members of IEEE in Region 3, bringing together engineering professionals, computer scientists, engineering faculty, students, and business people to share results of the latest in original technical research through information exchange, tutorials, exhibits, seminars, workshops, and student competitions.  During the most recent history of the conference, SoutheastCon has extended its reach beyond regional activity as we have seen increased participation by our national and international colleagues.

Looking forward to seeing you all at our upcoming meetings in 2022.

Sincerely,
