This is your Monthly Member Communication – July 2022 Edition

Greetings Region 3,

I am sitting here in a hotel room near Capitol Hill, reflecting on our blessings of being citizens of this great Nation. We have endured some of the worst things in our Nation’s history this past 2 years. However, those things that didn’t break us made us that much stronger.  Please take some time out to enjoy the fireworks, friends, and family on this 4th of July Holiday! Hopefully, many of our Sections will have an in-person summer social as well. Browse the following list of technical meetings and events scheduled for the remainder of this summer. All Sections have been challenged to start posting photos of their live events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at:  https://r3.ieee.org/

Announcements:

Announcing the 2022 Volunteer Leadership Training (VoLT) Program

The VoLT Program invites volunteers who have a desire to continue growing as IEEE volunteers and lead their local units to complete the program’s prerequisite courses, and apply for the program. To date, over 430 volunteers representing all ten IEEE Regions, and over 150 Sections, have graduated from the VoLT Program. As a testament to its success, graduates are taking positions of leadership with their local operational units and beyond. Log into the IEEE Center for Leadership Excellence (CLE) to access the courses. For complete application requirements, see our Application Checklist. Applications will be accepted from 1 June 2022 through 30 July 2022. For more information about the program, please visit us in the CLE. https://mga.ieee.org/

IEEE Industry Relations Platform (IRP)

In 2021, a CRM-type platform for this reason (called IEEE Industry Relations Platform or IRP), funded by the IEEE New Initiatives Committee. This year, the plan is to get a group of users to pilot the IRP for various industry engagement activities and provide feedback to help us determine how useful/valuable a tool the IRP is. The type of volunteers we need are folks working in industry; have continuously engaged with industry for various reasons on behalf of the Section/Region; worked on or developed industry-relevant products, services and programs for IEEE; have one time or another held an IEEE industry volunteer position.

On behalf of Patrick Russoniello and Subodha Charles, they would greatly appreciate it if you could share this invite and/or recommend volunteers within Region 3 to be a part of the pilot user group this year. We would benefit greatly from your/their expertise and guidance as we build out the platform. They estimated only 8 hours of time for the whole pilot experience. Below are three main expectations during the pilot process:

  1. Review the user resource guide and videos to understand the IRP capabilities
  2. Add information from your current industry engagement activities and projects related to your Section/Region
  3. Fill out a survey to give feedback about your experience

The target is to get 100 users for the pilot this year and appreciate your support. For more information, contact s.charles@ieee.org and p.russoniello@ieee.org

Use of Synchrophasors to Understand what happened to Power Grid During Winter Storm URI Event,

By: Dr. Mack Grady, PE

The winter event that occurred in February of 2021 was one of the costliest winter storms on records.  The storm resulted in over 170 million Americans being placed under various winter weather alerts being issued by the National Weather Service in the United States across the country and caused blackouts for over 9.9 million people in the U.S. and Mexico, most notably the 2021 Texas power crisis. The blackouts were the largest in the U.S. since the Northeast blackout of 2003.

DC Arc Flash Calculations, By: Mr. Tom Blair, PE – Senior Member

We will cover the three most common methods for performing Arch Flash calculations: Maximum Power Transfer Method, Stokes & Oppenlander Arc Resistance Method, and the Paukert Arc Resistance Method.

Additionally, we will discuss the difference between methods when applied to a voltage sourced system compared to a photovoltaic sourced system.  Lastly, we will discuss some test results of PV systems and compare to the various calculated models to determine how accurately the models estimate actual incident energy levels on PV systems.
