This is your Monthly Member Communication – October 2022 Edition

Greetings Region 3,

Happy October everyone!  October is very important to all of us as IEEE members, because tomorrow is global IEEE Day! We are celebrating IEEE and spreading awareness of this great organization worldwide.  All Region 3 members should make a point to attend an event on 10/4/2022 and share something IEEE related via social media. Region 3 is having a joint meeting for those that want to attend, see information below for all the upcoming meetings this month. Sections. please post photos of your local IEEE Day events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at: #ieeeday  https://r3.ieee.org/

EPICS in IEEE Launches Access and Abilities Competition

Do you want to make a difference in your community? EPICS in IEEE is launching the Access and Abilities Competition to challenge university students from all over the world to use their engineering skills to help solve accessibility challenges. Proposals should:

  • identify an accessibility problem in the local community
  • detail how the student team will attempt to solve the problem using engineering and technology skills
  • Application Deadline: 1st November 2022

Student teams can win US$5,000 – US$10,000 to build their prototype or solution. Visit the EPICS website for more information! Or click the following link: https://epics.ieee.org/get-involved/access-and-abilities-competition/

Interested in Addressing Climate Change?

IEEE Region 3 is offering grants of up to $1000 to Region 3 Sections and their Chapters, Affinity Groups, and Student Branches to work on projects that address Climate Change. This is a topic which involves many complex problems and technical challenges. That makes it an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate IEEE’s commitment to “Advancing Technology for Humanity.”  What Kinds of Projects can We Do?

Because Climate Change affects different areas in very different ways (see, for example, NOAA’s https://statesummaries.ncics.org/), your groups have a wide latitude regarding the details of the project that you do. Any project that can be associated with Climate Change is a potential candidate.  Applications for an initial round of funding must be submitted by October 15, 2022. If all funding has not been exhausted following that initial deadline, then a second round of funding that removes the one project per Section and $1000 per project constraints will be offered. The deadline for those applications will be December 15, 2022. All funds will be released in 2022 and all projects must be completed by November 30, 2023.  Applications should be emailed by the Section Chair to Allen Jones, allen.jones@ieee.org.

Virtual and Hybrid Meetings:

Tuesday – October 4th, 2022 (All Day Events Literally Everywhere) IEEE USA & IEEE GLOBAL

IEEE Day, Join the celebration around the world! Every year, IEEE members from IEEE Sections, Student Branches, Affinity groups, and Society Chapters join hands to celebrate IEEE Day. Events happen both virtually and in person. IEEE Day celebrates the first time in history when engineers worldwide gathered to share their technical ideas in 1884. Click on the link below to see what’s happening near you. IEEE Day’s theme is: “Leveraging Technology for a Better Tomorrow”. While the world benefits from what’s new, IEEE focuses on what’s next.

IEEE Day commemorates the anniversary of the first time when IEEE members gathered to share their technical ideas, which took place in 1884. Worldwide celebrations demonstrate the ways thousands of IEEE members in local communities join together to collaborate on ideas that leverage technology for a better tomorrow.

Hackathon and Workshop Planning, By: Ryan Integlia, Citadel Student Branch Counselor

The Citadel’s student branch counselor is planning a local Hackathon and workshop, potentially in concert with Senior Design.  It involves faculty from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of Cyber and Computer Sciences at The Citadel, along with potential participation from the College of Charleston. In preparation, we are reaching out across the Southeast Region asking for support. We are looking for feedback on our Hackathon idea and for members in industry to act as Virtual Technical Mentors to provide short 20-30 minute demonstrations and working examples for senior design / capstone students and hackathon participants.

Connecting Space Assets to the Internet: Changes and Solutions, By: Dr. M. Atiquzzaman

Data communications between Earth and spacecrafts, such as satellites, have traditionally been carried out through dedicated links. Shared links using Internet Protocol-based communication offers a number of advantages over dedicated links. The movement of spacecrafts however gives rise to mobility management issues.

This talk will discuss various mobility management solutions for extending the Internet connection to spacecrafts.  The talk with provide an overview of the network layer-based solution being developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force and compare with the transport layer-based solution that have been developed at University of Oklahoma in conjunction with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Network in motion is an extension of the host mobility protocols for managing the mobility of networks which are in motion, such as those in airplanes and trains. The application of networks in motion will be illustrated for both terrestrial and space environment.

Introduction to Agility, By: Derik Pack

By some accounts, more than 50 Agile approaches, frameworks, and methodologies are in use today. Many of these approaches are influenced by the values and principles in the Agile Manifesto. We will explore why there is such a diaspora of approaches and the use cases where some of the more common approaches are typically used.
