Greetings Region 3,

The IEEE membership is thankful in November.  This month we want to make sure to extend a helping hand to those in need in our local communities. Although we should be doing this year-round, this month our Sections should make a point of joining together to do volunteer hours at a local food distribution center, or to collectively donate non-perishable goods. Region 3 members should make a point to donate, volunteer and share via post awareness on social media. Please see information below for all the upcoming meetings this month. Sections, post photos of your local IEEE holiday events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at: https://r3.ieee.org/

Announcements:

Interested in Addressing Climate Change?

IEEE Region 3 is offering grants of up to $1000 to Region 3 Sections and their Chapters, Affinity Groups, and Student Branches to work on projects that address Climate Change. This is a topic which involves many complex problems and technical challenges. That makes it an excellent opportunity for us to demonstrate IEEE’s commitment to “Advancing Technology for Humanity.”  What Kinds of Projects can We Do?

Because Climate Change affects different areas in very different ways (see, for example, NOAA’s https://statesummaries.ncics.org/), your groups have a wide latitude regarding the details of the project that you do. Any project that can be associated with Climate Change is a potential candidate.  Applications for an initial round of funding must be submitted by October 15, 2022. If all funding has not been exhausted following that initial deadline, then a second round of funding that removes the one project per Section and $1000 per project constraints will be offered. The deadline for those applications will be December 15, 2022. All funds will be released in 2022 and all projects must be completed by November 30, 2023.  Applications should be emailed by the Section Chair to Allen Jones, allen.jones@ieee.org.

Generative Adversarial Networks for Spectrum Sharing, By: Dr. Ender Ayanoglu (Professor UC Irvine)

In this talk, an application of machine learning approach known as generative adversarial networks towards spectrum sharing is presented. This particular approach is known to be very successful for anomaly detection in image processing. We alter performance criteria used in this set of networks from image processing applications to wireless and employ such networks for spectrum sensing, both in conventional and cooperative spectrum sensing. Initial results show the efficacy of this approach.

IEEE Fellows Information Session, By: Dr. Hulya Kirkici, R3 Fellows Coordinator

IEEE Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.

As part of the Region 3’s Member Engagement activities, we continue to provide informational webinar to support our IEEE members.  The webinar will focus on a review of IEEE Fellow program, including the history of the Fellow grade membership, how the program evolved through the years to become the program it is today, and the elevation process, including the nomination package preparation and submission deadlines.  Members are encouraged to ask questions to become familiar with the nomination process, nomination package preparation and selecting appropriate technical society to evaluate the nomination packages.
