This is your Monthly Member Communication – February 2023 Edition

Greetings Region 3,

I hope you have seen our Newsletter that was just released. The main theme is “New Year, New World Connections”. Let’s make it a point this year to use our technology and make some new connections globally.  The Region 3 Conference Committee has planned a phenomenal 2023 SoutheastCon, so make sure to save the dates, April 13 – 16th, 2023 and make some new connections in Orlando, FL. We hope your February is filled with love, as all the stores have changed their scenery to red hearts and lots of chocolate! Please look at the information below for all the upcoming meetings. Sections, post photos of your local in-person meetings on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at: https://r3.ieee.org/

Announcements:

Region 3 wants to support each Section in areas/programs that are needed in 2023?

Send your specific ideas and topics to your Section Chair and they will compile a list to send to their Area Chair. A form will be sent out to the Section Chairs to submit these topics to the Executive Committee.

Are you interested in Volunteering within your local IEEE Section or within Region 3?

The 2023 Region 3 theme is: “Reinvigorating Our Volunteer Base”.  You can volunteer for small things that make a big impact! Volunteering offers flexibility within IEEE. Through this platform, IEEE members will be able to advertise and search for volunteering opportunities, be it short- or long-term, local or remote, or requiring different skills. Also, inquire about micro-volunteer opportunities.  Use the volunteer platform to sign-up, https://volunteer.ieee.org

Demystifying Impedance Calculations (Lunch-N-Learn), By: Thomas Blair, PE

This IEEE lunch and learn will cover the basics of performing impedance calculations and converting quantities from the P/Q plane to the R/X plane.  The level of difficulty of this material is Intermediate. A background in power system analysis and the per unit system will be beneficial.

This lunch and learn will cover:

Converting quantities from the P/Q plane to the R/X plane

Converting P/Q and R/X quantities from primary to secondary values (as seen from PT and CT)

Converting S and Z from one base to another base.

Plotting generator P/Q diagram in excel format.

Plotting generator R/X diagram in excel format.

Develop 21 & 40 functions for generator protection.

Plotting 21 & 40 settings in excel format.

Comparing 21 & 40 settings to generator capability.

Real-world Subsynchronous Oscillation events in Power grids with High Penetrations of Inverter-Based Resources (Virtual Event), Co-hosted By: PES/IAS and WIE, Speaker: Dr. Lingling Fan

This virtual seminar presents a survey of real-world sub-synchronous oscillation events associated with inverter-based resources (IBR) over the past decade. The focus is on those oscillations in the subsynchronous frequency range known to be influenced by power grid characteristics, e.g., series compensation or low system strength. A brief overview of the historical events is presented followed by detailed descriptions of a series of events. This virtual seminar also examines causation mechanisms and proposes future research directions to meet grid needs worldwide.
