Greetings R3 Members,

We are charging into “Back-to-School” season, my household included. Everyone will be affected, whether it be shopping, planning or just by the elevated traffic in school zones. IEEE Local Sections should start re-connecting with their student chapters to host socials, and meet-n-greets with the YPs, and other introductory technical meetings.  Engaging with our local pipeline of engineers is the best way to share technology and innovations.  Browse the meetings scheduled for the remainder of the summer and be sure to get your Section’s meetings announced next month! Post photos of your local in-person meetings and STEM events on our social media platforms and the Region 3 website, located at: https://r3.ieee.org/

Announcements:

Are you interested in Volunteering within your local IEEE Section or within Region 3?

The 2023 Region 3 theme is: “Reinvigorating Our Volunteer Base”.  You can volunteer for small things that make a big impact! Volunteering offers flexibility within IEEE. Through this platform, IEEE members will be able to advertise and search for volunteering opportunities, be it short- or long-term, local or remote, or requiring different skills. Also, inquire about micro-volunteer opportunities.  Use the volunteer platform to sign-up, https://volunteer.ieee.org

We are pleased to announce that the Region 3 wiki is now live!  Go to https://kb.ieee.org/r3 to get answers to your IEEE R3 questions.  If you have more questions, leave a message on the page or email r3-ssc@ieee.org

The “Meet the 2024 IEEE President-Elect Candidates Forum” will be held on 12 August at Sections Congress. The event will also be livestreamed and re-broadcasted by IEEE.tv for members and professional staff not attending Sections Congress. Promotional collateral has been created to encourage registration for those participating virtually. The flyers and promotional material for candidates can be accessed here:

Nullspace Electromagnetic Solver: SW for Large-scale EMag Design & Analysis, By: Daniel Faircloth, PhD. – Founder and CTO of Nullspace

Nullspace, Inc. was launched as a spin-off from IERUS Technologies, an established defense contractor in Huntsville, AL. Nullspace focuses on delivering advanced engineering software for electromagnetics applications.  Nullspace offers three products commercially: Nullspace EM – an EM simulation software designed for solving large-scale EM problems for defense, aerospace, automotive, and communications applications; Nullspace Prep – CAD and meshing pre-processor that integrates with Nullspace EM; and Nullspace ES – the world’s only commercial electrostatic solver for extremely large-scale design and analysis in quantum computing.

HYBRID Meeting: In this presentation, we will focus on challenging aspects of electrically large antenna designs.   Phased array design and analysis is complicated through the necessary use of multi-layered radomes for environmental protection. Designers must be able to understand the impacts of the radome on array performance such as beam steering error and cross-polarization isolation. Similarly, graded-index lenses provide gain enhancement and reduce gain roll-off.  However, they are historically complicated to design and produce.  Nullspace EM empowers users to rapidly and accurately analyze these complex structures to ensure designs meet intended performance.  Case studies will be presented for several realistic examples.

How to Start and Expand a Successful Consulting Practice or Business – Entrepreneurship Series 2nd Webinar, By: William R. Kassebaum, P.E. Founder and Co-Chair of the Central Indiana Engineering Consultants’ Network

This webinar will cover 3 main topic areas – first, steps to forming a new business – forms of business, evaluation of the business model, and initial planning & goal setting; second – marketing, sales, operation, and getting paid; and third – tips and tools to improve operations, efficiency, and ROI. Your business should iterate through all these concepts as it grows – re-evaluating, improving operations, and automating repetitive business operations. These topics and methods apply regardless of the type of business you are building – whether a consultancy, a product company, or service business.

IEEE ComSoc School Series Atlanta, Georgia: Next Generation Cloud Communications, In-Person Event

By: IEEE Communications Society, located at Georgia Tech Research Institute in Atlanta

This ComSoc School Series event will be focus on next generation cloud communications. Cloud communications empower nearly every aspect of engineering and technology. The modern generation of communication technology is increasingly relying on the use of cloud communication to improve performance metrics like spectral efficiency, reliability, and less processing time. Cloud communications is a telecommunications engineering field university students should be familiar with and excited about. This ComSoc School Series event will bring together scholars, local professionals, Distinguished Lectures (DLs), and students to learn, connect, and get inspired about the latest innovations in cloud communications. In this program, students will hear lectures from industry leaders in cloud communications, explore leading edge concepts, be exposed to the latest innovations in the industry, and will have the opportunity to network with professionals and peers in the field. In addition, hands-on tutorials may be incorporated into the program for students to have an interactive learning experience.
