Unraveling the Evolution of Wi-fi: A Journey From 1 to 7, By: Dr. Chris Hansen/Engineer at Covariant Corp

Wi-Fi standards have had a profound impact on how we connect and communicate in the digital age. They have transformed our daily lives, enabling us to access information, connect our devices, and engage with online services seamlessly. As Wi-Fi standards continue to evolve, we can anticipate even faster, more reliable, and secure wireless networking experiences in the future.

Wi-Fi 7, the latest version of the ubiquitous wireless networking technology based on the IEEE 802.11 standard, is now coming to market. This talk describes the steps that Wi-Fi has taken to get where it is today. It includes history of the standards, regulations, integrated circuits and features that make fast, short range wireless networks possible.

Career and Journey of an Engineer, By: Michele Heyward, CEO of Positive Hire

We are preparing an interview to learn about her career path and how life takes us in surprising ways. Come ready with questions and feel free to share with others that might be interested. Miss Heyward’s innovative software, PH Balanced, background focuses on retaining underrepresented women in STEM management positions. Through her work as a People Analytics Consultant and Certified ISO-30415 Diversity & Inclusion Professional, Michele helps companies create equitable and inclusive workplaces for all. Michele holds a BS in Civil Engineering and an MS in Industrial Management from Clemson University. She has experience as a construction project manager in the energy sector building the power grid…it’s women’s work, so someone had to do it!

Let’s continue celebrating and learning from our local wonderful engineers and how they are making a difference!

A Terahertz Frequency Free-Space Amplifier, By: Dr. Jenna Kloosterman of University of Southern Indiana

At lower frequencies heterodyne receivers amplify a signal before down converting it with a lab generated local oscillator signal. Until now no such amplifier existed in the Terahertz (THz) frequency range, which means current THz heterodyne receivers are hampered by excess noise in the mixing element. In this talk, I will report on recent measurements of a THz amplifier based on a Quantum Cascade Meta-Surface Amplifier (QCMSA) and the next steps that will be needed to prove its utility for use in heterodyne receivers. Rather than rely on wires and connectors that will not be able to match the impedance of the THz frequency signals, the amplifier reflects its signal into free space, which enables quasi-optical coupling between the optics and mixing element. The amplifier is designed to work from 2.5-2.7 Terahertz (THz) to detect astrophysically important spectral lines that will lead to a better understanding of the star formation process. The project is a joint effort between the University of Southern Indiana (USI) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA and funded through a Research and Technology Development grant from JPL and the Endeavor Grant from USI. The success of this work will lead to future joint sub-orbital or orbital missions.
