Science Saturday w/ Costal SC Section

A family STEM event highlighting Region 3’s STEM Literacy Project.  Attendees enjoyed the books of Andrea Beaty and successfully completed the Three Little Pigs STEM Challenge.

Celebrating Engineering Ingenuity Day with the Richmond Section

IEEE Richmond Section hosted  CEI day showcasing the challenges and opportunities in engineering and introduced attendees to particular types of engineering concepts from each discipline.

ASF Exploration Expo w/ the Atlanta Section

The Atlanta Science Festival’s Exploration Expo is the “Atlanta’s biggest science party” and the culminating event of the Atlanta Science Festival. Over 15,000 curious kids and adults witness the wonder of science with more than 85 hands-on interactive science booths, live science demos, and shows from local organizations, universities, and companies.

Region 3 and the Atlanta Section sponsored the Curious Kids Zone, a place designed to inspire future scientists and engineers with STEM and STEAM activities specifically for ages 3 and older. We provided two exhibit booths “The Engineer’s Workshop” as well as the mobile exhibit IEEE USA’s MOVE truck.

About

What is STEM?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These disciplines are in every aspect of our lives, fuel innovation, and create millions of jobs.   IEEE Region 3 seeks to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by showing elementary students how STEM forms the foundation of the world around us, proving how fun and interesting these fields are to middle and high school students, and encouraging college and graduate students into the professional community.

What is STEM Outreach?

STEM Outreach provides opportunities for students to learn from professionals who are actively contributing to science, technology, engineering, and math. A STEM outreach event is an opportunity for someone to learn more about STEM, what STEM is, and how it affects our everyday world. Whether giving a tour a lab, hosting an event, or mentoring a student, STEM outreach can take many shapes or forms

Why is STEM Outreach Important?

According to the National Science Foundation, “In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”

STEM-based education teaches students more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets and promotes lifelong learning.

Volunteer Resources

IEEE Resources

IEEE TryEngineering aims to empower educators to foster the next generation of engineers and technology innovators. The site provides  educators, students, and volunteers with pre-university resources to help engage and inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.

IEEE REACH provides pre-university teachers with free, open educational resources that situate science, technology, and engineering in their social and humanistic contexts.

TryNano.org offers broad and updated resources for those interested in exploring or participating in the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The IEEE Nanotechnology Council (NTC) supports this initiative and maintains these resources to encourage professionals, students, and others to be informed about the latest research, trends, and educational opportunities.
